You know what’s sad? When a locally owned shop goes out of business. You know what’s happy? When a new owner takes over the business and breathes new life back into it. That’s what happened over the summer to Mama Bear’s Bakery and Cafe in Fishers.
My husband and I just stumbled onto Mama Bear’s, looking for a place to get a bite to eat and kill some time before our son’s elementary school football game. The staff greeted us with a smile, impressive considering they were about to close in 45 minutes. The decor definitely gives evokes a cozy mountain lodge feel. Hubbard & Craven’s coffee is in the coffee pot, but I’m not a coffee drinker. What I was on that Sunday afternoon was hungry, so I was glad to see the broad menu carefully written on a giant blackboard.
I went with the chicken oriental wrap with a side of potato salad — and I was so hungry that I scarfed it down before it even occurred to me to take a picture of it. My husband gave one of the pastries a try. He’s not a big sweets eater, but he finished that pastry down to the crumbs.
Because we were there near closing, the complimentary water in the pitcher had run out and there were not lids for my cup. The ladies behind the counter took care of both of those things quickly and happily.
Mama Bear’s is the kind of place that I would meet a friend for hot chocolate and a scone on a winter evening (open until 7:00pm every night but Sunday, when it closes at 3:00pm). It’s also a place that I would take my laptop and try to catch up on work. There is plenty of table space, as well as couches and leather chairs for relaxing with a hot beverage. If you visit in the warmer months — or you just really like to be outside when it’s chilly, there is a small patio to enjoy as well.
