Indiana State Fair Train: Board the Express!

by Bryan Johnson

The Indiana State Fair Train, one of the attractions of Fishers, Indiana, has become one of the most popular means of transportation to and from the Indiana State Fair. It departs from the Fishers Train Station, and passengers disembark at 39th Street and Millersville Road in Indianapolis. It’s just a short walk from there to the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

There is no need for reservations, but the train operators for this popular Fishers attraction suggest that passengers plan on arriving about one-half hour ahead of their departure time to park and buy tickets. Tickets to the Indiana State Fair are not for sale at the train station and must be purchased at the entrance to the fair itself.

The train ride is an extension of the Indiana Transportation Museum, a functional collection of authentic locomotives that take short trips to nearby locations like Fishers and other interesting sites in Central Indiana.

These jaunts have become such favorites that they’ve become one of the most popular things to do in Fishers. The railroads were an enormous influence in the growth of the country, and Indiana is no exception. Taking the Indiana Transportation Museum’s train excursions carries you back into the nostalgia of simpler times gone by.
The WFMS 95.5 FM Fair Train offers departures every thirty minutes during the run of the fair. Round trip tickets for adults were $13 in 2008, and $6 for kids from 3-12, with a free ride for kids under three. The ride itself takes about 45 minutes, one-way, and is a great way to see the beautiful countryside spanning from Fishers to Indianapolis.

The NKP1 is the “upgrade” car used for the Indiana State Fair Train rides. For many years, it was the premier car for Fishers business people traveling the Nickel Plate Road. A fully functional, authentic antique train from 1929, the NKP1 belongs to the Indiana Transportation Museum and is often scheduled for other excursions than the Indiana State Fair.
