Fishers was first settled by William Conner in 1802 as a trading post along the White River. Originally named Fisher’s Switch in 1872, when the area’s first post office was established, the apostrophe and “Switch” were dropped and the name officially changed to Fishers in 1908.

A century later, Fishers is a booming community with a population that nearly doubled between 2000 and 2008. The Liberty Plaza Project, scheduled for completion by the end of 2009, will change the look and feel of downtown Fishers. Comprised of graduated rectangular blocks set in a spiral topped off by a golden eagle, the monument will be Fishers’ lasting memorial to all those who gave so much for the freedom and liberty America enjoys.

A main event that takes place every year in Fishers and draws folks from miles around is the Fishers Freedom Festival. This celebration of independence has been going strong for more than two decades. It stretches across a two-day weekend in summer, includes everything a festival should include and is held at the beautiful Roy Holland Memorial Park.

Another perennial crowd-pleaser occurs in summer as well. The Fishers Summer Concert Series, which convenes on the well-maintained lawn in front of downtown Fishers’ Town Hall, offers live music from assorted Indianapolis bands every Tuesday night under the stars.
